What exactly is it?
And how do you do it?

Oh why thank yopu for asking.
Roleplaying is essentially taking on the role of another person. Writing for them and deciding how they would react to various different situations. It's a lot like writing an interactive story with other people, especially with forum based RP. The TL;DR version is "pretending to be someone you aren't."
There's a lot of different ways to RP in a bunch of different formats. Chat based RP is done in real time and usually consists of short responses back and forth on a messaging program (FB messenger, Google+, Discord, etc). There's a few different formats for that, namely a more chat based emoting system (using some sort of indicator when an action is being taken) and ParaRP or "Paragraph RP" which is written closer to how forum based RP works. There's a few ways of playing tabletop RPGs online and most of them use a chat based system for RP. RPing on MMOs works essentially the same way as chat based RP does, as it's all done in real time as well.
PBeM or Play By email used to be a popular form of RP, but it's sorta fallen out of style. It basically consisted of RPing very similar to a forum based setting but sending your responses out to everyone in the game.
Forum based RP is what's done here. There's a designated forum and places for someone go join a story thread and participate. Forum based RP is the most like writing a book with other people. Generally the posts are longer and consist of internal thoughts and dialouge as well as external dialouge and actions. It's a more in depth way of telling the story you're trying to tell than chat based and usually has less dialogue involved. That and you don't have to be on at the same time as the people you're writing with to get it done. I'm sure you've noticed that the RP threads move rather slowly (especially at this time of year as this starts my 6 months of busy as shit) and that's fine so long as there's ample communication. In the case of Fiend and I, we chat outside of the forum so we can share ideas and keep each other updated on wtf is going on.
Hopefully that makes sense to you. I tend to get hella long winded. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. :3

Thank you for that explanation of roleplaying. While reading through your explanation, I couldn't help but think, "That's sounds like fucking fun.". Never actually done it myself. But always willing.

Well the Driftwood RP is open to new members. I would recommend reading the OOC and asking questions for any clarification you need.

Thank you, Fiend, I read it just a little while ago, and I just posted in the Driftwood thread. I added a little scenario.

I took a look at your post and I'll admit right now that I wasn't very specific with my description, so that was my fault here - especially since you're still new to the whole thing.
In multi-player RP it is generally considered bad form to write for another player's character (unless you're the storyteller and pushing the story foreward). A lot of players get very upset when someone else controls their character's actions without prior consent. This is generally considered a form of metagaming which is frowned upon and in many circumstances against the guidelines of the wherever you happen to be playing.
In an RP you want to focus on a character you control, you OWN character, and try your best to not write for other people's. You'll note that with the three players in the thread, we don't control the other characters - just the ones that we introduced. (In some instances there is minor mention of someone else's character doing something that wasn't specifically stated in their post, but those are always cleared before the post goes up with the player.)

Right. Our bad for not being specific on that. So there's no hard feelings in that regard given that you're new to the concept yet all the same I deleted your post so that the flow of the thread isn't disrupted by it.
I am saving a copy of your post for posterity, however.

Thank you for the constructive input, you guys. I apologize for stepping outside the rules. But I would just like to understand, for next time, I should simply create my own characters and implement them into the story at hand? Btw, Fiend, thank you for saving my post, I kinda worked a long time on it

If you'd like to join then yes you'd need to create your own character. If you'd like any help, advice, or tips on making an original character, feel free to ask, and also we can work with you on how to best integrate your new character into the story.

Ok, I have these two characters. It's kinda like, one is the headman, and the other is the sidekick. They're called Danforth and Pape. Danforth is the leader of the two, while Pape is a very viable backup. Danforth is smart, while Pape is kinda big and tough. See where I'm going with this?

So it's Christmas season and I work half in retail and just got to this.
Have you thought any more on these two characters?

Well, I can say this: when I envision Danforth and Pape interacting with each other and the world they live in, I think military. They're definitely involved in conflict, but not with each other.
And I just wanted to add this: from what I've seen thus far, it seems to me that people might think roleplaying as involving characters and stories that only resemble Anime or Manga. But I think that becomes a little bit stereotypical for the practice of roleplaying. I feel it should be open.
