So, the religious aspect.
We're adopting Catholicism, basically, but with a few simplifications and no use Jesus. In the same way, I wouldn't want to be using “Allah,”or “Muhammad”.
So the main religion floods over the entire continnent. Certainly, there are the barbarians in the north, as well as people over the sea, and the desert tribes to the east, who all have different religions. They will call us infidels, and we will call them infidels, and we don't like one another. If we feel the need we can also assume something akin to crusades have happened because it would explain the emerging merchant class.
We don't need a pope. Let's go with Arch Bishops in each 'country' being the ultimate authority in that area. That will account for the variations in doctrine we see in different places.
Under them you have the bishops. Under them you have abbots. All of these ranks can hold land. Under those ranks you have monks and priests. Monks are responsible for the educating of people, the gardening, tilling of the earth, food preparation, copying of texts, keeping of libraries. The priests are responsible for the general welfare of the people. They perform the rights and sermons in the churches and chapels.
So there is one God. He is called God. I don't think we need to give him a name. The bible used will be “the holy texts”. That works well enough. And doesn't annoy anyone closed-minded people who read the forums.
There will be the standard 10 commandments, which are as follows:
Thou shalt have no other gods
Thou shalt not worship graven images
Thou shalt not take the Lord's name in vain
Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy
Honour they mother and father
Thou shalt not kill
Thou shalt not commit adultery
Thou shalt not steal
Thou shalt not bear false witness
Thou shalt not covet
We have baptism. We have communion and holy water. Yes, we do believe in transubstantiation. Because that was kind of the thing at the time.
The emphasis on in sermons is transformation through suffering. Monks routinely fast and deprive themselves to be closer to God, and others of different social rank do the same thing. Rather than forgiveness and entry to heaven through grace, it is through suffering. Expect people to starve themselves, and wear ragged clothes to show their faith in God. This will vary from province to province, of course. I know Rex has ideas on this, so if anything I'm writing becomes problematic let me know and we'll adjust it.
Church on the Sabbath is pretty much required of everyone. The King goes, the nobles go. Just about everyone in the country side will go. Not only does it succour faith, but also becomes a social event.
Strangely, in this time, differences in believe and questioning doctrine were tolerated for the most part. I don't know why, but they were.
The only things that'll really bring the eire of the church is apostatsy, heresy, worshipping false gods, etcetera. Then you will likely be charged with witchcraft or heresy and killed.
Some provinces also adhere to the seven deadly sins, or cardinal sins, which are as follows.
Superbia (Pride)
Avaritia (Greed)
Luxuria (Extravagence, or Lust)
Invidia (Envy)
Gula (Gluttony)
Ira (Wrath)
Acedia (Sloth)
Anyone accused, and convicted of these crimes, is essentially excommunicated by the church. In some provinces, there are other punishments waiting.
